Stanton County EMA Hosts Storm Spotter Training Despite NWS Cancellations

Stanton County, NE – In the face of widespread storm spotter training cancellations across the region, Stanton County Emergency Management made the decision to move forward with its scheduled class on April 7th in Pilger, ensuring that local first responders and community members are prepared for severe weather.

Due to staffing shortages and federal budget cuts issued by the Department of Government Efficiency, the National Weather Service (NWS) Omaha/Valley office announced the cancellation of all in-person spotter trainings effective March 28th. Refusing to let this critical training opportunity slip by, Stanton County Emergency Manager Mike Frohberg sought an alternative solution.

Frohberg turned to retired meteorologist and longtime NWS Warning Coordination Meteorologist Brian Smith, who brought over 40 years of severe weather expertise to the class. With the support of a generous local family donation, the training moved forward as planned and was attended by more than 50 first responders and members of the public.

“This training is vital to the safety of our community,” said Frohberg. “With spring storm season already showing signs of increased activity across the country, I wanted to make sure our local responders have the up-to-date knowledge and confidence to act quickly and safely when severe weather threatens.”

Attendees received hands-on guidance on how to identify storm structures, tornado development, and safe spotting techniques. The session also opened dialogue around the current state of the NWS, with many questions raised about the impact of recent staffing cuts. Despite the changes, the NWS Omaha/Valley office has reiterated its continued commitment to public safety, warning coordination, and timely weather alerts.

This event is just one example of Stanton County EMA’s dedication to preparedness, ensuring that both emergency personnel and the public are empowered with the tools and training they need to stay safe during Nebraska’s storm season.
