Damage from Storms on April 1, 2024

Stanton County saw its first round of Severe Weather on Monday morning. At 4:04am, the National Weather Service issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning until 4:45am for Central Stanton County, with the main hazards of Hail. As of 4:15am, the Stanton County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to Highway 15 and 831st, south of Pilger for powerlines down across the highway. Stanton County Public Power was notified and sent a crew out to survey the damages and repair the lines. However, when they arrived, it was found that over 20 utility poles were snapped in half. In addition, Stanton County EMA was notified of damage to a machine shed, siding of a house, and multiple trees broken in the same area. Stanton County EMA reached out to the National Weather Service and provided drone photos and damage assessments when the sun come up. It was determined by the NWS that straight-line winds were responsible for causing the extensive damage. There was no rotation or concern of a tornado, based on radar images. Stanton County also saw 1/4 to 1/2" diameter hail that piled up to an 1" deep with this storm system. As of 12:00pm, the SCPPD was able to restore power to all of the residents in the area, however they would be working on replacing utility poles and transformers throughout the rest of the week.
